How to Obtain a Marriage License
Applications for New Jersey Marriage Licenses must be obtained in the Municipal Registrar's Office in the municipality where either partner resides. If both partners are from out of state, they may apply at the Municipal Registrar's Office in the municipality where the ceremony will take place.
Both partners and 1 witness who is 18 years of age or older, and knows the couple, must appear at the Municipal Registrar's Office. Some municipalities will require proof of residency such as a driver's license, lease, or tax return.
It is recommended that you apply at least 2 weeks before the ceremony. You may apply as early as 6 months prior to the wedding. You must apply at least 72 hours prior to issuance of the marriage license. The marriage license is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance.
The official who performs the ceremony must file the license with the Municipal Registrar in the Municipality where the ceremony was performed within 5 days of the ceremony.
Premarital blood tests are no longer necessary in New Jersey.
Fees
A fee of $28 is due at the time of the application.
